Mobile Marketing Puzzle

What is the simple definition of mobile marketing? The exact answer may vary a bit depending on who you ask, but the simplest way to define it is any marketing that is done on mobile devices.

Having said that, it can be a puzzle with many different pieces that leave some people feeling overwhelmed. To help with that, we have a breakdown of mobile marketing from various sources online.

What is Mobile Marketing?

Here are a few definitions from various places online.

  • WikiPedia – Love the site or hate it, WikiPedia is where a lot of people begin their search for information. They define mobile marketing as “marketing on or with a mobile device, such as a cell phone.” They go on to write, “More specific definition is the following: “using interactive wireless media to provide customers with time and location sensitive, personalized information that promotes goods, services and ideas, thereby generating value for all stakeholders”.[2]
  • Business2Community – Chris Horton sums up mobile marketing as being “about Convenience, Simplicity, and Proximity.”  There is not a lot of information here, but he offers some key truths about marketing on mobile devices. Horton wrote, “Remember that today’s empowered mobile users are growing in sophistication each day, so keep a tight focus on your core message and deliver it with creativity and honesty. Keep the path to the sale as short and easy as possible, and make interacting with your brand on mobile convenient and proximate (relevant).”
  • Techopedia - Cory Janssen wrote, “Mobile marketing is the interactive multichannel promotion of products or services for mobile phones and devices, smartphones and networks. Mobile marketing channels are diverse and include technology, trade shows or billboards.” The page then goes on to explain a little more about this type of marketing and how businesses should use it.

These are not the only definitions that are out there, but they should give you a good idea of what the phrase means.

 Types of Mobile Marketing

Here is a rundown of some of the basic ways you can get your message out via mobile devices.

  • SMS / MMS – Plain text messages or multimedia text messages are one way to market to people, although you need to make sure you have permission to send them a text.
  • Push Notifications – These are typically displayed on the top task bar for most phones. They are messages that can be sent from a mobile application.
  • Banner Advertising – There are also a lot of great mobile ad networks (like LeadBolt) that enable buying banner ads across a variety of mobile apps.
  • QR Codes - When using “quick response” codes, a message can be sent to a mobile phone after they scan a barcode that is usually attached to “real world” advertising.
  • Location Based – Mobile advertisers can also set-up a “virtual fence” defining boundaries. When a person steps into this area, their cell phone is sent a message.

Mobile Marketing & Privacy Concerns

Beyond the definition of mobile marketing, there are other areas of the topic that should be explored. This includes privacy concerns that have been raised by consumers as well as consumer advocacy groups around the world. This is likely to be a topic of conversation for years to come, which is why it is important to think about when planning any type of marketing campaign on mobile devices.
